고양특례시가 민선 9기 핵심 공약인 시민 출퇴근 시간 단축을 실현하기 위해 주요 상습 정체 구간 개선에 본격적으로 나선다.

고양특례시는 시민들의 교통 편의를 높이기 위한 첫 사업 대상지로 대표적인 상습 정체 구간인 장항사거리를 선정하고, 이달 실시설계에 착수했다고 16일 밝혔다.

장항사거리는 자유로에서 장항IC를 통해 고양시 도심으로 진입하는 주요 관문이다.

최근 인근 MBC 드림센터와 일산호수공원, 장항지구 등을 오가는 차량이 크게 늘면서 출퇴근 시간대마다 심각한 교통 정체가 반복되고 있다. 

특히 도심 방향으로 좌회전하는 차량에 비해 현재 좌회전 차로가 2개에 그쳐 병목현상이 지속돼 왔다.

고양시는 대규모 토목공사에 따른 막대한 예산과 장기간의 공사 기간을 줄이기 위해 기존 도로 자원을 효율적으로 재배치하는 방식으로 개선사업을 추진하기로 했다.

이에 따라 도로 인근 보도와 유휴 녹지축을 조정해 공간을 확보하고, 기존 2개인 좌회전 차로를 3개 차로로 확장한다. 증설 구간은 약 220m에 이른다.

시는 관련 행정 절차를 신속하게 마무리한 뒤 올해 하반기까지 공사를 완료해 시민들이 출퇴근 시간대 교통 흐름 개선을 직접 체감할 수 있도록 한다는 계획이다.
