경기북부보훈지청이 호국보훈의 달을 맞아 미래 세대인 청소년들과 함께 역사의 아픔과 호국영웅들의 숭고한 희생을 되새기는 뜻깊은 시간을 마련했다.

경기북부보훈지청은 12일 파주시 파평면 금파리 일대에서 문산제일고등학교 학생들을 대상으로 6·25전사자 유해발굴 현장 견학 프로그램인 ‘히어로즈 리턴, 조국의 품으로’를 진행했다고 밝혔다.

이번 프로그램은 국방부 유해발굴감식단과 연계해 추진됐으며, 청소년들이 6·25전쟁의 역사적 의미를 올바르게 이해하고 나라를 위해 희생한 호국영웅들의 헌신을 직접 체감할 수 있도록 기획됐다.

이날 학생들은 실제 유해발굴이 진행되고 있는 현장을 찾아 국방부 관계자로부터 유해발굴 과정과 신원확인 절차에 대한 설명을 들었다. 

학생들은 발굴 작업이 이뤄지는 현장을 직접 둘러보며 아직 가족의 품으로 돌아가지 못한 국군 전사자들의 넋을 기리는 시간을 가졌다.

현장 견학 이후에는 설마리전투 추모공원을 방문해 참배를 진행했다. 

학생들은 추모공원에서 나라를 위해 희생한 참전용사들의 헌신을 기리며 오늘날의 자유와 평화가 수많은 이들의 희생 위에 세워졌음을 되새겼다.

견학에 참여한 한 학생은 “교과서와 책으로만 접했던 6·25전쟁을 실제 유해발굴 현장에서 마주하니 전사자들의 희생이 얼마나 큰 의미를 지니는지 깊이 느낄 수 있었다”며 “나라를 위해 자신을 바친 분들을 앞으로도 잊지 않고 기억하겠다”고 말했다.

경기북부보훈지청 관계자는 “유해발굴은 국가를 위해 목숨을 바친 호국영웅들을 끝까지 책임지는 국가의 당연한 책무”라며 “이번 견학이 미래 세대가 보훈의 진정한 가치를 배우고 나라사랑 정신을 함양하는 계기가 되기를 바란다”고 밝혔다. 

이어 “앞으로도 청소년들이 직접 체험하고 공감할 수 있는 참여형 보훈 프로그램을 지속적으로 확대해 나갈 계획”이라고 덧붙였다.
