경기북부보훈지청이 7일 청사에서 독립유공자 故 맹시정 지사의 후손에게 대통령표창을 전수하는 뜻깊은 자리를 마련했다.

이번 포상 전수는 '독립유공자 후손찾기 사업'을 통해 오랜 기간 행방을 알 수 없었던 후손을 찾아낸 끝에 이뤄졌다. 

특히 2007년 정부 포상이 결정된 지 18년 만에, 그리고 독립운동 당시로부터는 106년 만에 훈장이 비로소 유족의 품에 안겼다는 점에서 의미가 각별하다.

故 맹시정 지사는 1919년 3월 14일 함경남도 풍산군 천도교구당 앞에서 200여 명의 군중과 함께 독립만세운동을 주도한 공로를 인정받아 2007년 대통령표창을 추서받았다. 

그러나 후손을 찾지 못해 포상이 전달되지 못한 채 세월이 흘렀고, 이번에 끈질긴 추적 끝에 손자를 찾아 전수식을 거행하게 됐다.

박용주 경기북부보훈지청장은 "조국을 위해 헌신하신 지 오래되었고 포상 결정 이후로도 많은 세월이 흘렀지만, 이제라도 후손을 찾아 포상을 전해 드릴 수 있게 되어 매우 뜻깊고 영광스럽다"고 말했다.

이어 "국가보훈부는 단 한 분의 독립유공자 후손이라도 더 찾아내어, 영웅들의 명예가 후대에게 자긍심으로 남을 수 있도록 끝까지 최선을 다하겠다"고 강조했다.

국가보훈부는 '독립유공자 후손찾기' 사업을 지속적으로 전개하며, 기록 속에만 남아있는 독립 영웅들의 후손을 찾아 훈장을 전수하는 국가적 책임을 다하는 데 힘쓰고 있다.

The late Governor Maeng Si-jeong was posthumously awarded a Presidential Citation in 2007 in recognition of his contributions to leading the independence movement with a crowd of approximately 200 people in front of the Cheondoist Church in Pungsan County, South Hamgyong Province, on March 14, 1919.

However, years passed without the award being delivered due to a lack of descendants. After a persistent search, the grandson was finally located and a ceremony to present the award was held.

Park Yong-ju, Director of the Gyeonggi Northern Veterans Affairs Office, said, "He devoted himself to his country for a long time, and many years have passed since the award decision. However, it is truly meaningful and an honor to finally be able to find his descendants and present the award."

He continued, "The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs will do its utmost to find at least one more descendant of independence activists so that their honor can be preserved as a source of pride for future generations."

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs is continuing its "Finding the Descendants of Independence Activists" project, striving to fulfill its national responsibility by identifying descendants of independence heroes whose legacy remains only in historical records and passing on their medals to them.
