파주시가 DMZ(비무장지대) 평화관광의 새로운 랜드마크가 될 '임진각 평화곤돌라 스카이워크 조성사업'을 본격 착공하며 관광 인프라 확충에 나섰다.

이번 사업은 임진각 평화곤돌라 상부정류장에서 캠프그리브스로 이어지는 기존의 가파른 경사로를 누구나 안전하고 편리하게 이용할 수 있는 무장애(Barrier-Free) 보행 공간으로 개선하는 것이 핵심이다. 

특히 휠체어 이용자와 고령층, 어린이 등 이동에 불편을 겪는 관광객들도 제약 없이 이용할 수 있도록 접근성과 편의성을 대폭 강화할 계획이다.

새롭게 조성되는 스카이워크는 단순한 이동 통로를 넘어 자연과 평화, 문화를 함께 즐길 수 있는 복합 관광공간으로 꾸며진다. 

관광객들이 특별한 추억을 남길 수 있도록 'DMZ 벤치'와 '평화의 계단' 등 다양한 포토존이 설치되며, 주변의 아름다운 자연경관을 감상할 수 있는 전망대와 휴게 쉼터도 마련된다. 

이와 함께 소규모 버스킹과 공연이 가능한 야외무대를 조성해 문화와 관광이 어우러지는 체류형 관광 콘텐츠를 제공할 예정이다.

파주시는 지난 5월 기본 및 실시설계 용역을 완료했으며, 올해 12월 준공을 목표로 공사를 추진하고 있다.

이번 사업은 경기도가 추진한 '2025년 경기도 관광지 및 문화관광자원 개발 사업'에 선정되며 사업의 필요성과 경쟁력을 인정받았다. 

총사업비는 35억7천만 원으로, 경기도와 파주시가 각각 50%씩 부담해 추진된다.

손배찬 파주시장은 "스카이워크가 완공되면 임진각과 캠프그리브스를 찾는 방문객들의 접근성과 편의성이 획기적으로 향상될 것"이라며 "공사 기간 동안 안전을 최우선으로 철저히 관리해 이동 약자를 비롯한 모든 시민과 관광객이 편리하게 이용할 수 있는 파주시만의 명품 보행 공간을 조성하겠다"고 밝혔다.
