파주시는 국토교통부가 지정하는 ‘자율주행자동차 시범운행지구’에 운정신도시, 교하동, 금촌동 일대가 새롭게 포함됐다고 9일 밝혔다.

이번 지정은 지난해 12월 개통한 수도권광역급행철도(GTX)-A 운정중앙역을 중심으로 주간·야간 자율주행 버스를 운행해 교통 취약 시간대 이동권을 확보하고, 지역 간 접근성을 강화하기 위한 것이다.

야간 노선은 운정중앙역–운정신도시–금촌역을 잇는 총 14.7km 구간으로, GTX-A 막차 이후까지 운행돼 운정·금촌 생활권의 심야 이동 편의 개선과 대중교통 확충에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

주간 노선은 야당역–운정중앙역–파주출판단지를 연결하는 8.6km로 조성된다. 이는 경의중앙선과 GTX-A로 구축된 기존 남북 철도축과 동서 생활권을 연계해 운정·교하 지역 접근성을 크게 높일 전망이다.
