파주시가 임진강 일원을 DMZ의 생태와 역사·문화가 어우러진 국가정원으로 조성하기 위한 본격적인 행보에 나섰다.

파주시는 지난 4일 시청 대회의실에서 김경일 시장과 관계 공무원 등 30여 명이 참석한 가운데 '임진강 국가정원 타당성 검토 및 기본구상용역' 완료보고회를 개최했다고 5일 밝혔다.

이날 보고회에서는 그동안 논의된 방향과 내용을 종합한 최종 기본구상안이 공유됐다.

파주 임진각에서 연천 고랑포구에 이르는 임진강 권역을 대상으로 한 이번 구상은 DMZ의 생태·안보·역사·문화를 아우르는 특화된 국가정원을 조성하는 것이 핵심이다.

시는 파주만의 정원 특화 전략과 함께 ▲지역 균형 발전 ▲관광 활성화 ▲접경 지역 상생을 목표로 하는 단계별 추진 방안을 제시했다. 

이를 통해 오랫동안 규제로 인해 개발이 제한됐던 접경 지역에 새로운 활력을 불어넣고, 지역 경제 활성화와 주민 복지 향상을 동시에 도모한다는 계획이다.

김경일 파주시장은 "임진강은 접경 지역이라는 이유로 오랫동안 잠재력을 발휘하지 못했지만, 지금은 규제 완화와 함께 새로운 기회를 맞이하고 있다"고 말했다.

김 시장은 "이번 최종 구상안을 기반으로 임진강 일원이 파주의 미래를 여는 상징적인 국가정원 프로젝트로 자리매김할 수 있도록 철저하게 준비하겠다"며 "접경 지역 주민들의 오랜 희생에 대한 실질적인 보상과 지역 발전 효과가 함께 담보될 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다"고 강조했다.

파주시는 이번 기본구상안을 바탕으로 국가정원 지정을 위한 행정 절차를 본격화하고, 관계 부처와의 협의를 통해 사업 추진에 속도를 낼 방침이다.

Paju City announced on the 5th that it held a completion report meeting for the "Imjingang National Garden Feasibility Study and Basic Design Service" in the City Hall conference room on the 4th.
