고양특례시가 유해야생동물로 인한 도심 환경 피해를 막기 위해 주요 공공장소에서 먹이주기를 전면 금지하고 과태료를 부과한다.

시는 3일 일산문화광장, 마두역광장, 주엽역광장, 낙민공원 등 시민 이용이 많은 10개 공공장소를 '유해야생동물 먹이 주기 금지구역'으로 지정했다고 밝혔다.

내년 1월 1일부터 6개월간 계도기간을 운영한 뒤, 7월 1일부터 본격적으로 과태료를 부과할 예정이다.

 위반 시 1차 20만원, 2차 50만원, 3차 이상은 최대 100만원의 과태료가 부과된다.

이번 조치는 비둘기 등 유해야생동물로 인한 악취, 건물 훼손, 질병 전파 등의 피해가 지속적으로 발생함에 따라 마련됐다. 

시는 지난 2일 관련 내용을 공식 고시했다.

시 관계자는 "비둘기 먹이주기는 선의로 보일 수 있지만, 실질적으로는 시민 건강과 환경에 악영향을 주는 행위"라며 "도심 환경 개선과 위생 문제 해소를 위해 시민 여러분의 적극적인 참여와 협조를 부탁드린다"고 말했다.

시는 계도기간 동안 안내판 설치, 홍보 활동, 현장 점검 등을 병행해 시민 인식 개선에 나선다는 방침이다. 

이를 통해 도심 속 사람과 야생동물이 조화롭게 공존하는 환경을 조성한다는 계획이다.
