11월 13일 고양시 일산동구 부페파크에서 열린 월남참전 61주년 기념 위로연 현장. 80여 명의 참전용사들이 한자리에 모였다. 

백발이 성성한 어르신들의 얼굴에는 세월의 무게가 묻어났지만, 전우를 마주한 눈빛만큼은 61년 전 그 청년의 모습 그대로였다.

대한민국월남참전자회 경기도지부 고양시지회(지회장 박영섭)가 주최한 이번 행사는 단순한 기념행사를 넘어, 생사의 갈림길에서 함께했던 전우들의 깊은 동료애를 확인하는 자리였다.

"고령의 나이에도 이렇게 참석해주신 회원 여러분께 진심으로 감사드립니다." 박영섭 지회장의 격려사는 담담했지만, 그 안에는 함께 살아돌아온 전우들에 대한 깊은 애정이 묻어났다.

대한민국 6.25참전유공자회 고양시지회 조춘식 지회장은 축사를 통해 "선배 세대의 호국정신을 이어받아 평화를 지켜나가겠다"며 참전용사들의 헌신을 기렸다. 

사단법인 희망나눔누리 최호정 이사장 역시 "국가를 위해 헌신한 참전용사들의 숭고한 희생정신을 기억하겠다"고 약속했다.

1964년부터 1973년까지, 총 32만여 명이 베트남 전쟁에 파병되어 5천여 명이 전사하는 큰 희생을 치렀다. 

오늘 이 자리에 모인 어르신들은 그 역사의 산 증인이다.

뷔페 식사를 함께하며 어르신들은 지난 시절을 회고했다.

 "그때 그 녀석이 나를 업고 뛰었지", "밤새 호우가 쏟아지던 날 함께 참호를 지켰던 기억이 나네" 같은 이야기들이 식탁 위를 오갔다.

 웃음 속에 눈시울을 붉히는 분들도 있었다.

식사 후 고양시지회가 준비한 기념품이 참석자들에게 전달됐다. 

작은 선물이었지만, 그 안에 담긴 감사와 위로의 마음은 결코 가볍지 않았다.

한 참석자는 "나이가 들어 몸은 불편하지만, 전우들을 만나면 젊어지는 것 같다"며 소감을 전했다. 

또 다른 어르신은 "우리가 흘린 땀과 눈물이 헛되지 않았다는 걸 후세대들이 기억해주길 바란다"고 말했다.

고령의 나이에도 불구하고 한자리에 모인 월남참전용사들. 그들은 젊은 시절 조국의 부름에 응답해 먼 이국땅에서 자유와 평화를 지켰다. 

그리고 지금도 여전히 대한민국의 든든한 버팀목으로, 후세대에게 호국정신을 전하는 살아있는 역사로 우리 곁에 있다.

이날 행사는 참전용사들에게 감사와 위로의 마음을 전하고, 그들의 희생을 기억하며 오늘날 우리가 누리는 평화의 소중함을 되새기는 의미 있는 시간이었다.

In his congratulatory address, Cho Chun-sik, president of the Goyang branch of the Korean War Veterans Association, honored the veterans' dedication, saying, "We will carry on the patriotic spirit of our predecessors and preserve peace."

Hope Nanum Nuri Chairman Choi Ho-jeong also pledged, "We will remember the noble spirit of sacrifice of the veterans who dedicated themselves to our country."

From 1964 to 1973, a total of 320,000 soldiers were deployed to the Vietnam War, and over 5,000 died in the Vietnam War, suffering great sacrifices.

The seniors gathered here today are living witnesses to that history.
